Paterson House was built between 1901 and 1903 by Ottawa lumber baron J.R. Booth, who built it for his daughter Gertrude and her husband Andrew Fleck. Gertrude lived there until her death in 1940 when it was bought by Senator Norman Paterson who lived there until his death in 1983. The house was then bought by developers hoping to turn it into a retirement home; these efforts and others fell through, and by the late 1980s the building came close to being lost.

Andrex Holdings, in association with Wilberfoss Inc. and Credit Industriel Desjardins, salvaged the vandalized and badly neglected building and today the restored edifice serves as an embassy.
